Grassanova

‘Grassanova’ may be the new band on the block, but its members have years of experience playing bluegrass and other forms of acoustic music.  ‘Tom & Marie’ have joined forces with R. J. Siegers and Jim MacWilliams to form an exciting and dynamic new acoustic sound in New York’s Southern Tier.  ‘Grassanova’ plays solid traditional bluegrass as well as popular songs done in a bluegrass/newgrass style, and they’ll throw in a few other musical styles such as swing, blues, and early jazz just for fun.

Kathy Selby and John Wobus

Kathy Selby plays traditional fiddle music from England, Scotland, Ireland and North America. Her repertoire spans almost four centuries, from 17th century English country dances to recently composed tunes.  Her expressive playing embraces a broad spectrum ranging from lively jigs and reels to soulful airs and tragic laments.  A native of England, Kathy began singing and playing both folk and classical music at an early age. She discovered fiddle music on her first visit to her in-laws in Ireland, and underwent a rapid and fanatical conversion from violinist to fiddle player.  Now living in Ithaca NY, Kathy plays for contradances and English country dances, and also at concerts, festivals, coffeehouses, weddings and special events.

John Wobus is an accomplished pianist who has developed his contradance and English style over nearly twenty years of playing for dances in the Central New York region.  John currently plays in a variety of ensembles: with Kathy Selby; in Contranella with his daughter Megan Beller and son-in-law Charley Beller; in Heart's Delight with David Smukler, Laurel Sharp, Eileen Nicholson and Zeke Smukler; and in Rosie's Ready Mix with Hope Grietzer and Curt Osgood. John can often be found with his fiddle at jam sessions in the Ithaca vicinity.

Not A Clue

Dannielle Swart has been playing guitar since high school days, and started performing with the Java Joe Jammers in 2000.  During 2004, she also played in the folk group Gaskill Road during which time banjo was added to the arsenal.  More recently, Dannielle has collaborated with Hope Grietzer to present "Fiddling with Books" at area libraries and schools.  Dannielle has also appeared locally as a member of the Susquehanna River Basin Band and the Cotton Mill Girls.

Jon Larcheveque - After a failed attempt as a teenager, re inspired by local musician friends, Jon picked up the five string banjo 5 years ago. Jon began jamming locally when ever possible and caught the bluegrass bug after attending his first local PENNY bluegrass festival.  He started playing with the Java Joe Jammers in 2005.  Multiple local bands have spun off including the /Lost Mountain Ramblers/ which played the 2006 Newark Valley Apple and Mountain Man Festivals.  Since 2006 he has played with the local band /Copper Creek/ at the Spiedie Fest Northstage.  Jon has also appeared locally joining /Hobo Stew /mostly bluegrass band appearing in local winery's and coffee houses.  Playing 3 finger style, Jon's interest include mostly bluegrass,  but can be heard playing along with folk, old time, rock and blues adding banjo where ever needed.

Rhythm Guitar, Banjo, vocals: Mark Breno has been playing guitar since the ripe age of 14. Growing up his house was filled with the originators of rock-n-roll from the 50s and 60s thanks to his parents love of Elvis, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino and others.  While he and his friends were all enjoying the 70's rock of Zepplin and Aerosmith, Mark had the good fortune to be exposed to and eventually fall in love with bluegrass, folk, traditional and Celtic music
through the mentoring of his Uncle Earl "Butch" Cross.  After living and playing in Georgia and North Carolina he and his family moved back home rekindling his relationship with his Uncle and various friends and musicians. Mark was a member of The Downeast String Band from 97-2004 and started playing 5 string banjo in 2003 His exposure to blues based rock began with his inclusion to the Ring of Fire. You can hear Mark's love of harmonies, sounds of bluegrass and that "Chicken Pickin" rockabilly sound in the bands unique sound.
